Management styles

The management style adopted by an individual is influenced by environmental factors such as the wider company style, industry and other limiting factors, but the outcome usually falls into one of three categories: autocratic, paternalistic or democratic. Autocratic managers supervise closely and do not delegate decisions easily to others, for fear of losing control. This style is common in large organisations or where a manager is responsible for low skilled workers. Paternalistic managers are concerned with the health and general well-being of their workers. Managers using this style will often consult workers for opinion and feedback, demonstrating that they value their thoughts, but will ultimately make decisions on their workers' behalf. A democratic style of management involves entrusting employees with decisions. The manager seeks to empower workers with the free exchange of ideas and information. Any decisions made are put to a vote with the majority group winning.
