Accounting Rate of Return

An internal accounting tool used to gauge the relative profitability of a business project or venture. It is calculated by taking the average operating profit divided by the average investment or book value of assets of a company, expressed as a percentage. The values used are after depreciation and amortisation have been taken into account.
