When Markets Collide: Investment Strategies for the Age of Global Economic Change

Mohamed El-Erian
McGraw-Hill Professional (Jul 2008)

As depicted by the cover illustration on this book, the world is currently in an economic spin as old markets are colliding with new. Whilst many economists dismiss these changes as 'noise', El-Erian suggests that these changes are in fact signals of a fundamental realignment of the rules of investment. In When Markets Collide, he argues that the global economic infrastructure remains largely unchecked to reflect these new realities and investigates the challenges and opportunities structural realignment may bring.

The book explains the complex interdependent global financial changes and places them in a context that is both useful and manageable for the reader. It enables the reader to navigate this economic landscape and equally important, lays out the tools with which to implement action: analytical anchors which can implement change. The ultimate goal is to clearly demonstrate how investors can translate financial knowledge into practical and profitable solutions for the individual investor and the organisation. The book focuses on four main areas:

  • How to think about the new opportunities and risks
  • Constructing an appropriately diversified and internationalised portfolio
  • How to protect your portfolio against new sources of systemic risk
  • The impact of central banks and financial policies around the world

Mohammed El-Erian brings formidable expertise to answer some of the biggest questions in finance strategy today. It is a call to action with an accompanying action plan for investors, policy makers and business thinkers who want to understand the complex and rapidly changing economic landscape they are now making decisions within.
